Soft Baked Gingerbread Cookies Recipe

1 c. shortening (Crisco)
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 c. molasses
1 c. buttermilk
5 1/2 c. flour
4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ginger
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. extra sugar for rolling dough

In a large bowl, cream together the shortening, brown sugar, molasses, and buttermilk. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed sugar mixture. Roll the dough into balls and then roll the balls in sugar. Place cookie dough balls on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 11-12 minutes.
