Date Squares Recipe

1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cups oatmeal

Date Filling:
1/2 lb chopped dates
1/2 cup water
2 tsp brown sugar
grated rind of half orange
2 tbsp orange juice
1 tsp lemon juice

Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Cut in the butter using a pastry knife. Add sugar and oatmeal. Mix well and press 1/3 of mixture into a 9 x 13 pan. Reserve the rest for on top of the filling. Cook chopped dates, water, brown sugar and orange rind until thick and smooth. Add 2 tbsp orange juice and 1 tsp lemon juice. Cool before spreading onto base, then place reserved crumb mixture on top of filling. Bake at 325 F for 30 minutes.
