3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 1 teaspoon water
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup chocolate chips
Nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Mix ingredients in order given. Add chocolate chips (and nuts if you wish). Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 350. Do not overbake.

This recipe easily doubles. I often add just a little bit more of flour. Probably a quarter to half a cup per batch.

Take these cookies out when they are just beginning to brown and they will stay very soft.
