Ingredients: 2 cup dark Karo syrup 2 cup sugar 1 and 1/2 cup butter 2 eggs 1 tablespoon cardamom ( can omit) 1 teaspoon allspice 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon anise 1 teaspoon black pepper Pinch of salt 1 teaspoon of soda Flour to make dough stiff

Directions:Bring syrup, sugar, butter and salt to a rolling boil. Set aside and cool for a bit. Add eggs and spices and flour enough to make the dough stiff so you can pick it up and roll into a pencil shape. Cut into 1/2 to 3/4 inch pieces and bake at 350º to 375º for 8-10 minutes. Don't get too brown. Cookies should feel hard. |

Notes: This recipe noted it was Grandma Dreyer's. Not sure if it originated in Germany or not. I do remember my Grandma Dora making them. They were always a special treat at Christmas. A funny story about these cookies and difference in cultures. I took them to a holiday dinner at our Scandinavian Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota one year. At the end of the evening, my cookies were still in the kitchen and never served. I always figured the Norwegians didn't know what they were and didn't realize the treat they missed!
