"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Directions:
In a medium bowl, dissolve yeast in 1 1/2 cups warm milk; set aside. In a very large bowl, add flour, sugar, salt and baking soda; mix well. In another bowl, mix the rest of the milk, butter, oil and anise seeds. Add the yeast mixture; beat well. Add the wet mixture into the dry; mix until well-incorporated. On a floured surface, knead the dough until smooth, about 5 minutes. Place into a large greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise until double. Turn dough out onto a floured surface. Form into 4 to 5 balls and place onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Cover with a dish towel and let rise for another hour. Brush tops with beaten egg wash and bake in a preheated 350º oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden brown.

Mom's Uncle Gordon married Lillian Carlson later in his life. She was Swedish and we all loved her very much. When mom found this recipe for Swedish Anise bread, she decided to surprise her and make it. Needless to say, she loved it!
