Ingredients:
Ingredients:
3 pkgs. dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
5 cups self-rising flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup shortening
2 cups buttermilk, lukewarm

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve the yeast in the warm water; set aside. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar and baking soda. Cut in the shortening. Add the buttermilk and yeast; gently mix, then turn onto a floured surface. Knead softly to incorporate flour. Divide the dough in half. Pat each half out until the dough is about 1 inch thick. Take a knife or biscuit cutter and cut into 2x2-inch squares. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets and let rise until doubled. Bake in a preheated 350º oven for 10 to 15 minutes.

Personal Notes:
I once had a heated debate with a friend about "the best roll" recipe. I claimed my mom's butterhorn rolls were the best. One week later, she brought me her Aunt Minnie Sharp's Miracle Roll recipe. She claimed they were "the best rolls in creation!" I truly had never seen a recipe like it. Not only did it have self-rising flour and baking soda, but yeast...a lot of yeast. So I made them. They were not difficult at all and very forgiving, if you are not used to making homemade bread. Well, they were "to die for"...like a Popeye's biscuit on steroids. I am ashamed that I only admitted to her they were good, when I really wanted to kiss her feet for sharing such an incredible recipe! Now, my mom's butterhorn rolls are still #1 in my book, but these are definitely next in line.
