Ingredients: 4 cups flour 3 tbsp. sugar 1 tbsp. baking powder 3/4 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 6 tbsp. butter 1 1/2 cups raisins 2 eggs 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Directions:In a large bowl, mix the first five dry ingredients. Cut the butter into 1-inch pieces and add them to the bowl. Using a pastry blender or fork, cut-in the butter until it resembles the size of a pea; add the raisins and mix. In a small bowl, beat eggs slightly with a fork. Reserve one tablespoon of the beaten eggs. Stir in the buttermilk and mix into the dry ingredients, until just moistened. The dough will be sticky. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead gently by hand. Shape dough into a ball and place on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Cut 4 inches across and 1/4 inch deep and brush with the left-over egg wash. Bake in a preheated 350 º oven for about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Test with a toothpick. |

Notes: I worked with a sweet Italian woman at Marshall Fields for years. She was a wonderful baker and every St. Patrick's Day would make this bread for us to enjoy. She knew how much I loved it and surprised me one day with the recipe (which I had asked for many, many times before...thank you, Nell!). It is best served warm out of the oven or the next day toasted for breakfast.
