"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

1/4 cup water
1 cup milk, scalded
1/2 cup shortening
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
2 well-beaten eggs
1/4 cup orange juice

5 cups sifted flour
Icing:
2 tbsp orange juice
1 tsp grated orange peel
1 cup powdered sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Soften active dry yeast in warm water (110º). Combine milk, shortening, sugar and salt in large mixing bowl. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast mixture. Add eggs, orange juice and orange peel. Beat well. Add flour. Mix to soft dough. Cover; let stand 10 minutes. Knead dough 5-10 minutes on lightly floured surface. When dough is satin smooth and pliable (it will show small blisters under surface when dough is drawn taut), place it in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the surface. Cover with damp cloth and let rise in warm place (82º) till double in bulk, about 2 hours. Punch down; let stand for about 15 minutes. Roll dough to rectangle 10x16 " and 1/2" thick. Cut strips 10" long and 3/4" wide. Roll each strip lightly under your fingers; knot. Arrange bowknots on baking sheet and tuck ends under. Cover; let rise till double. Bake in hot oven (400º) 12 minutes.
Icing: Blend orange juice, grated orange peel and powdered sugar. Brush the icing on with a pastry brush to obtain a smooth, even glaze.

In 1969, Nona took a job as a cook for a private family. Grandma Olson sent some recipes for her to use. This was one of the recipes.
