1 cup butter or margarine
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
chopped nuts
candied cherries, cut in half - optional
raspberry preserves - optional

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375º.
Cream together butter and brown sugar until fluffy, add egg and mix well. Stir in vanilla, add 1 cup flour and mix until smooth, continue adding flour until dough is moderately stiff. Roll dough into 1 to 2 inch balls, roll into chopped nuts, place on cookie sheet, press thumb into middle of ball and then fill with either cherry or preserves. Bake for 10 minutes until light brown.
