2 yeast cakes
1/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup milk, scalded
3 1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup melted shortening
3 eggs, well beaten

Directions:
Soften yeast in warm water. Add sugar and salt to scalded milk; cool to lukewarm and add to yeast. Add 1 cup flour and beat; add shortening, eggs, and remaining flour sifted with salt and cinnamon. Beat well; stir in currants. Cover with damp cloth; let rise until double (about 1 hour). Punch down. Let dough rest 10 minutes (covered). Roll 1/2 inch thick and cut with a 2 1/2 inch floured cutter. Shape into buns; place 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Brush tops with slightly beaten egg whites; cover. Let rise until double. If desired, use scissors to snip tops of buns at right angles to form crosses. Bake in moderate oven (350º) for 12-15 minutes. To remaining whites add powdered sugar until its spreading consistency; then mark crosses on buns. Makes about 20 rolls.
