3/4 cup dates, chopped
1 cup walnut meats, chopped
3 T butter
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda in 1 cup boiling water
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs, well beaten
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup bread flour
1 tsp. vanilla, if desired

Directions:
Directions:
Mix by hand the dates, walnuts, butter, salt, and soda dissolved in the boiling water; set aside. Mix the beaten eggs with the sugar; add flour and vanilla and stir until well blended; add to first mixture. Bake 70 minutes in medium-hot oven (350º).
