1 C sugar
1 C butter, room temperature
3 Tbsp sweet sherry
1 egg
3 C all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp crushed anise seed (or 1 1/2 tsp anise extract)
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 C colored sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350

Mix plain sugar, butter, sherry, and egg in large bowl. Stir in flour, baking powder, anise, salt, and cinnamon. Roll into 1 inch balls and place 2-3 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten using glass or cookie stamp greased and dipped in colored sugar to 1/4 inch thick. Bake 8-10 minutes until set and just beginning to brown. Remove from pan and cool on rack. Using a cookie stamp and different colored sugars makes these adaptable to many holidays and occasions.
