3/4 cup soft shortening
1 cup brown sugar packed
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 1/4 cups sifted flour
2 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Mix thoroughly shortening, brown sugar and molasses. Stir in rest of ingredients. Chill dough. Roll into size of large walnuts. Dip tops into sugar. Place sugar side up, three inches apart on greased baking sheet. Sprinkle each cookie with 2 or 3 drops of water for crackled surface. Bake 10 to 12 minutes just until set - not hard.
