2 c. brown sugar
2 c. hot water
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. raisins
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 c. warm water
3 c. flour
1 heaping tsp. baking powder

Directions:
Directions:
Put brown sugar, hot water, shortening, raisins, salt, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a saucepan; bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.

Dissolve baking soda in the warm water, and add to cooked mixture along with flour and baking powder. Mix well.

Bake in greased, floured angel food cake pan at 325 for 1 hr.

This cake is called War Cake because it didn't require eggs, milk, or butter, which were rationed during World War II.
