2 cakes of yeast
1/4 c lukewarm water
1 c milk
1/4 c shortening
1/2 c sugar
1 tsp salt
2 beaten eggs
2/3 c raisins
1/3 c candied orange peel
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp allspice
4 1/2 to 5 c flour

Frosting: 1 c powdered sugar, 2 T hot water and 1/2 tsp vanilla.

Soften yeast in lukewarm water. Scald milk; add shortening, sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Add enough flour to make thick batter. Add yeast and egg.
Add raisins,orange peel, spices and flour to form a soft dough. Turn out on floured board and knead dough until it is smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl and cover. Let stand until doubled in bulk. When light, shape into small buns and place on a greased baking sheet. Let rise until almost double in size. With a knife or scissors cut a small cross in top of each bun. Bake in a 375 oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove from pan and cool on a rack. Before serving make a cross on the top of each bun with the powdered sugar icing.
