6 egg whites
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
dash of salt
1 1/2 c sugar

Filling:
6 egg yolks
3/4 c sugar
5 tbsp lemon juice
2 tsp grated lemon rind
1 c cream whipped
1/2 c Slivered almonds toasted

Preheat oven to 450º

Cake: Beat egg whites until foamy, add vanilla, cream of tartar, and salt. Beat until stiff. Add sugar gradually and continue beating until all sugar is dissolved and mixture is very smooth. Spread mixture into a 12X18 inch Pyrex pan which has been greased only on the bottom. Place in oven and TURN OFF HEAT. Leave in the oven overnight. Don't open the oven for at least 6 hours.

Filling: Beat egg yolks until very stiff; gradually add sugar and beat until smooth. Add lemon juice and lemon rind and cook mixture in top of double boiler until thick. Stir constantly. Cool and then add (fold in) whipped cream. Spread over meringue and refrigerate until served. Garnish with toasted slivered almonds.
