1 cup shortening (Crisco)
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
4 tsp. cocoa
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
2 cups buttermilk
2 tsp. baking soda

Icing:
6 tbsp. butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup milk
1-1/2 cup powdered
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt

Optional Broiled Coconut Icing:
4 tbsp. butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp. milk
1 cup coconut, shredded

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together shortening and sugar until light and fluffy; add eggs; beat.

Sift together flour, cocoa and spices. Add soda to buttermilk. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk to to shortening mix. Beat until well blended.

Bake at 350 in well greased and floured 9x13" sheet pan for 45-50 minutes. Remove from pan immediately. Cool on rack.

For icing: in sauce pan melt butter; add brown sugar and milk; bring to a boil and cook 2 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Using an electric mixer, beat in confectioner sugar, vanilla and salt.

Optional icing: Combine butter, brown sugar and milk in sauce pan; bring to boil. Remove from heat. Add coconut; pour over warm cake. Broil in oven slowly until golden brown, 2-3 minutes.
