Cake:
1/2 C butter
2/3 C milk
1 C sugar
1 1/4 C flour
1 egg
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla

Filling:
2 C 1% or 2% milk
1/2 vanilla bean, split and scraped
6 egg yolks
2/3 C sugar
1/4 C cornstarch
1 T unsalted butter

Frosting:
2 squares semisweet chocolate
2 T butter
2 C powdered sugar

Directions:
Cream butter and sugar. Add egg and milk. Gradually add remaining ingredients and pour into greased and floured 8" cake pan. Bake for 30 minutes at 350º til toothpick comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes, turn onto wire rack and cool completely and split into two layers.
Filling:
Mix sugar, cornstarch and salt in saucepan. Mix milk and egg yolks and gradually stir in. Cook over medium heat 'til boiling. Boil and stir one minute and remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Cool completely and fill layers.
Frosting:
Melt chocolate and butter in pan, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar. Beat with spoon until smooth. Frosting will stiffen as it cools.
