Directions:
In paraphrasing Napoleon's clever observation we know of one great modern army that practically "marched on its vocal chords". We refer of course to that irreverent, devil-may-car, khaki-clad Doughboy Army that mobilized overnight in America in 1917, to sing its way across the ocean and on to the battle fields of France.

The songs that came to the lips of the American Doughboys were spontaneous, care-free melodies that breathed confidence, laughed at possible dangers and thumbed their noses at physical discomforts. The songs of 1917 carried a definite similarity to the pioneer songs of 1848 and 1870. they too sang of a confidence built upon strength and a natural buoyancy arising in the hearts of freemen.

The gallant young men and boys who fought in '17 created songs that have become famous American classics, representing an exciting period in American history.
