16 oz. pkg dried split peas
4 c. water, divided
6 c. chicken broth
1/2 lb. bacon, chopped
1/2 lb meaty ham bone
3-4 carrots, peeled and chopped
2 stalks celery, sliced
2 onions, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
1 T. fresh chopped parsley
1 tsp. dried chives

Directions:
Directions:
Combine peas and 2 cups of water in a Large stockpot. Boil for 2 minutes and remove from heat. Cover and let stand for 1 hour to overnight, until peas are tender. Drain any water leftover, and add rest of ingredients except parsley and chives. Bring to a boil, and simmer over low heat for 2 hours. Remove ham bone, and shred meat from bone. Add ham meat back to soup, and just before serving, add herbs.
