4 cups of white flour
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp salt
2 Tbsp caraway seeds
Buttermilk
Raisins

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, salt and baking soda until well blended. Add enough buttermilk to make a soft dough. Knead on floured surface about 20 times. Fold in raisins. Form into two circles, about 2 inches thick Make a cross in the dough and bake on a greased cookie sheet at 400 for 20 - 30 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with tea and butter.

I have no idea why you make a cross in the dough. It's probably just tradition whose genesis is lost.
