German Chocolate Cake Recipe

4 oz German sweet chocolate
1/2 c boiling water
1 c butter
2 c sugar
4 eggs, separated
1 t vanilla extract
2 c all purpose flour
1 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
1 c buttermilk

Melt chocolate in boiling water and cool
Beat butter and sugar together
Beat in egg yolks
Stir in vanilla and chocolate
In a separate bowl mix flour, salt and soda
Beat these into chocolate mixture, alternating with buttermilk
Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form
Fold egg whites into batter

Pour batter into 3 9" cake pans, greased well
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until cake springs back in the center when pressed
Cool 15 minutes
Remove from pans. Spread frosting (below) between layers and on top of cake

Frosting -
1 1/2 c evaporated milk
4 slightly beaten eggs
1 1/2 t vanilla extract
1 1/2 c chopped pecans
1 1/2 c sugar
3/4 c butter
2 c flaked coconut

Combine sugar, milk, egg yolks, butter and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Cook and stir constantly over medium heat until thickened.
Remove from heat
Stir in coconut and pecans
Cool until thick enough to spread over German Chocolate cake
