1 c. soft shortening
2 c. brown sugar (packed)
2 eggs
1/2 c. water, sour mild or buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
1/8 tsp. cinnamon

2 c. dates, cut small
3/4 c. sugar
3/4 c. water
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Heat oven to 400. Mix well shortening, sugar, eggs. Sir in water, vanilla. Sift together and stir in flour, soda, salt, cinnamon. Drop with teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheet. Place 1/2 tsp. Date filling on dough. cover with 1/2 tsp. dough. Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 5 to 6 dozen.

Filling: Cook until thick, stirring constantly dates, sugar and water. Add chopped nuts. Cool.
