1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 tbsp. grated orange rind
2 tbsp. orange juice
1/2 cup pitted dates
3/4 cup walnuts

1/4 cup butter
1 tsp. orange rind
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 cups powdered sugar
2 tsp. orange juice

Sift together dry ingredients into a bowl and reserve.

Put 1/3 cup soft butter or oleo in a large bowl. Add 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar. Beat with a mixer or wooden spoon until light and fluffy. Beat in 1 egg, 1 tbsp. grated orange rind, 2 tbsp. orange juice. Beat in flour mixture and with mixture or wooden spoon until smooth.

Stir in 1/2 cup chopped pitted dates, 3/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts. Spread in greased and floured 11x7x1 baking pan. Bake in moderate oven (350º) 25-30 minutes or until browned. Spread with frosting and 1/4 cup walnuts.


Cream 1/4 cup soft butter until fluffy. Add 1 tsp. rated orange rind, 1 egg yolk, 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Beat until well blended. Add 2 cups sifted confectioner’s sugar, beating well. Mix 2 tsp. orange juice or enough to make frosting of spreading consistency.
