2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
6 medium apples, peeled and shredded

1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1/2 cup brown sugar

Cream sugar and shortening; add eggs and beat until smooth. Mix in the apples; add the dry ingredients. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 pan. Sprinkle the brown sugar and nuts on top. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Serve with ice cream, cool whip, or vanilla sauce.
