1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 oz .red food coloring
2 tsp cocoa
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/4 cups cake flour
1 Tbsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vinegar
Frosting Ingredients:
3 Tbsp. flour
1 cup milk
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat thoroughly. Add food coloring and cocoa. Set aside. Sift flour & salt. Stir in buttermilk and add to creamed mixture. Beat for 5 minutes. In a small bowl combine soda & vinegar. Carefully add into batter. Pour into 2-9 in. round layer pans (greased & lightly floured). Preheat oven to 350 and bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Let cake cool before removing from pans.
Cook in double boiler over boiling water until mixture becomes thick & custard like for 4 to 5 minutes. Cover immediately & set aide to cool. Cream butter, sugar and combine with cool custard. Add vanilla and beat well. Ice between layers and remaining icing on sides and top of cake.
