1/2 C shortening
1 1/4 C sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 C All Purpose flour
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 C cocoa
1 C hot coffee
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder

Very Good One-Bowl Buttercream Frosting:

6 Tbsp. butter or margarine
2 2/3 C powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 C unsweetened cocoa
1/3 C milk

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Grease two 8 inch round pans.
Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition until light and fluffy.
Combine cocoa and hot coffee stirring until dissolved completely.
Add to butter mixture starting with dry mixture and alternating with coffee mixture stirring gently until the batter is smooth. Add vanilla.
Divide batter evenly between pans. Bake for 30 - 35 minutes or until tested done with toothpick method. Remove from oven and cool on rack for 10 minutes. Invert cakes onto rack and finish cooling.

Frosting:
In medium bowl, beat butter. Mix sugar and cocoa together. Add to butter alternately with milk, beating to spreading consistency. Additional milk may be needed. Add vanilla.
