1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup Crisco
2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp soda
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs

Icing:
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
1 tsp vanilla, or to taste
chopped pecans

Boil all ingredients for about 1 minute and drizzle over cake.

Beat butter until smooth. Beat in sugar until fluffy, beat in eggs, one at a time. Sift dry ingredients together. On low speed of mixer beat flour mixture with butter mixture alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla. Pour into 3 (9") greased and floured cake pans. Bake at 350º for 35 to 40 minutes.

This was one of my favorite cakes, growing up. You can put any icing you like on it, but this is one my mother always used.
