Ingredients:
Ingredients:
225 grams butter (1 cup)
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tsp. black treacle (optional)
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla flavoring
3 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. (12 oz. pkg) chocolate chips
1/2 c. nuts (optional)
2 tbsp. hot water

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together the butter and sugar. Blend in the treacle, eggs and vanilla. Mix the flour, soda and salt together separately and add to the butter-sugar mixture along with the hot water. Blend well. Mix in the chocolate chips and nuts.

Heat the oven to 350º F (175º C). Drop the dough by heaping teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets or flat pans and bake for 9-11 minutes, until the edges are golden brown. They should be firm but not hard. Serve with cold milk.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
I "inherited" this recipe (modified slightly here for Nigeria) from a friend who was cleaning out his grandmother's house- he was going to throw her old recipe box in the trash. The card on which this was scribbled was probably from the '60's or earlier. Since then I've been asked for the recipe many times. Chocolate chips are too precious to waste, you might as well make the best cookies with them!!
