1 8 oz pitted dates chopped
1 c sugar
1 c hot water
1 c finely chopped walnuts
1 c butter softened
2 c firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 t vanilla
3 1/2 c all purpose flour
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t cream of tartar
1/2 t salt

Directions:
Combine dates, sugar, water in saucepan. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly 6 - 8 minutes until thick - remove from heat - stir in walnuts . Cream butter , brown sugar and eggs. Combine flour, soda, cream of tartar, & salt. Add to butter mixture. Divide dough into thirds. Roll into 12 inch squares on wax paper. Spread with date mixture - roll up jelly roll style.

Wrap in paper and chill over night. Cut into 1/4 inch slices. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 8 - 10 minutes. Cool on wire rack
