Cake:
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup cooking oil
3 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups fig preserved (mashed)
1 cup chopped nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla

Sauce:
1 cup sugar
1 stick margarine
1 T corn syrup
1 T vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon soda

Cake:
Sift together flour, salt, soda and sugar. Add oil; beat well. Add eggs. Add buttermilk gradually. Add fig preserves, nuts and vanilla. Pour into greased loaf pan (can be put into tube pan as well). Bake at 325 for 45 minutes.

Sauce:
Mix all ingredients. Boil for 3 minutes (don't over cook, as syrup will crystallize). Poke holes in cake and pour syrup over hot cake in pan or if using bundt pan, turn out, poke holes and pour over cake. Collect any run off and continue to pour over cake until absorbed. Syrup will thicken a little as it cools.

This is a delicious cake. The older the figs (i.e. some of Mome's old preserves) make the cake darker and stronger tasting. The newer preserves work very well also.
