1/4 cup soft shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup milk
2 cups sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp soda
1 cup broken nuts
1 - 2 cups cut-up raisins or dates

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses together thoroughly. Stir in milk. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and soda together and stir in. Mix in nuts and raisins or dates. Spread in greased oblong pan (9x13"). Bake at 350º for 25 - 30 minutes. Cool slightly...spread with lemon icing, and cut into bars. Makes 4 dozen.
LEMON ICING: Gradually beat 1/2 cup sifted confectioners' sugar into 1 stiffly beaten egg white. Add dash of salt, 1/4 tsp lemon extract.
