1 cup sweet milk
¼ pound cheese
3 slices stale bread
2 eggs, beaten
2 teaspoons butter
Pepper and salt to taste

Directions:

Run the bread through a meat chopper (or break up with fingers). Add cheese and other ingredients. Bake in a buttered pan. (Editor's note: Bake at 350° for about 25 minutes or until set.)

Editor: This was another recipe from the 1929 cookbook. It is much like a strata, but with broken bread. I let a strata set in the frig for several hours or overnight. Maybe by breaking up the bread setting isn't necessary.
Mamie was quite a modern woman. She was a college graduate, taught school (actually had a boarding school for girls in her home) was a florist and quite a horticulturist, drove her Jeep all over Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. She never married. Hugh and I inherited her home which had been empty for many years. We had a wonderful time remodeling it and making it our first real home.
