1 Tsp. Salt
1 Cup Shortening
1-1/2 Cups Sugar
2 Eggs
1 Tsp. Vanilla
2 Tbsp. Cocoa
2 Oz. Red Color
1 Cup Buttermilk
2-1/2 Cups Cake Flour
1-1/2 Tbsp. Vinegar
1-1/2 Tsp. Baking Soda
Frosting for Red Velvet Cake:
5 Tbsp. Flour
1 Cup Milk
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Butter
1 Tsp. Vanilla

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make paste of cocoa and red color. Mix salt and vanilla with milk and add to flour. Add alternately to shortening mixture then add cocoa mixture. Mix soda and vinegar and fold into above. (DO NOT BEAT)
Bake in 2 (9 inch) pans for 30 minutes at 350.
Cook flour and milk until paste. Cool and be sure it is cold. Cream sugar, butter and vanilla. Add to flour and mix. Beat until right consistency to spread. When finished it looks like whipped cream.
When cake is cooled frost.
