1 c. lard or butter
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. soda dissolved in 1/3 c. hot water
1 tsp. baking powder
2 c. brown sugar
pinch of salt
4 c. flour
1 pkg. dates cut up tossed with 2 T. flour
1 c. sugar
1 c. water

Mix the lard and eggs together until fluffy, add the sugar and beat a couple minutes longer. Add the baking powder, salt and flour. Mix until well incorporated.

Bring the water, dates and sugar to a boil and cook until thick. Cool and put 1 tsp. of filling
on top of cookie dough. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes.
