2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening (I use margarine)
4 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. butter flavor (optional)
1 c. buttermilk
3 c. sifted plain flour
1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1 pkg. German Sweet Chocolate
Chocolate icing for cake:
1/4 c. margarine or butter
4 tbsp. cocoa
1 box. confectioners sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
hot coffee to spread

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, flavorings and buttermilk. Add flour, salt and soda. Mix well. Add German chocolate which has been softened over warm water.Blend together well. Bake in tube loaf pan which has been greased and dusted with flour at 300º 1 1/2 hours. Test with toothpick. Cool 15 minutes.
Chocolate icing:Cream margarine and sugar,add cocoa and vanilla. Add enough hot coffee to obtain consistency to spread.Spread on cake.(Eddie Rushton Smith's recipe)
