1 cup finely chopped dates
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup shortening
1/4 cup cocoa
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 6 oz. package semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Directions:
Mix dates, water, and soda - cool. Mix flour & salt together -
cream shortening, cocoa, & sugar till fluffy. Add eggs & vanilla &
continue beating. Add flour alternately with date mix. Beat after
each addition. Do not overbeat.
Pour into 8 X 9" pgreased & floured pan. Sprinkle with nuts &
chips. Bake 350" for 40 to 45 minutes.
