2 c sugar
2 c strong coffee
1/2 c shortening
2 c raisins
1 apple peeled and grated

2 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsps baking powder
1 tsp each: cinnamon, allspice, cloves, nutmeg
1 c chopped walnets

In large saucepan, simmer first five ingredients for 10 minutes
Cool 10 minutes
Blend rest of ingredients and stir in mixture
Pour batter into well greased and floured 13 x 9 inch pan.
Bake 350 for 25 - 30 minutes. Coll and duest with powdered sugar.

Take away the milk, eggs and butter and what you have left is a great tasing moist and spicy cake that became popular after the stock market crash of 1929.
