Ingredients: |
Ingredients: 6 large Granny Smith apples 1/2 cup granulated sugar (I like to use superfine) 1 tsp. cinnamon or more if you like 1/2 tsp. ground cloves (optional) 3/4 cup light brown sugar 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tsp. lemon zest 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, coarsely chopped (optional) 4 tbsp. unbleached flour 3/4 stick butter, cold 1/3 cup oatmeal (optional)

Directions:1. Preheat oven to 350º. 2. Place lemon juice and zest in glass bown and rub sides of bowl with 1/2 lemon. This will help keep the apples from turning brown as you work. 3. Peel apples and slice thinly (about 1/4" thick), mixing in bowl w/ lemon juice as you go. 4. Add spices and granulated sugar and mix with apples. 5. Grease 9" x 13" baking dish with shortening or butter. 6. Layer apples in baking dish. 7. Place brown sugar, nuts, flour, and butter (diced into small pieces) and oatmeal (if desired) into bowl and cut butter into sugar and flour with two dinner knives until even and crumbly. 8. Spread crumbly mixture on top of the apples. 9. Bake until bubbling. |
