Directions: |
Directions:Dissolve yeast into ¼ cup of warm water; add sugar to yeast and water and let stand for a while.
Put flour into large pot, make a well and put water, salt and butter, then add yeast mixture. Mix well. If tacky, do not add more flour. Just form a ball and let rest in the pot for 2 hours and cover with a towel. After it rises, punch dough down and knead for a few minutes. Form loaves and put onto greased pans and let rise for 1 more hour.
Bake at 400 degrees F for 35 minutes or until bread sounds hollow.
VARIATION: Use Bread Machine! Great recipes in my Bread Machine cookbook. It’s a small white booklet actually. |

Notes: OK. So I used to bake bread the old fashioned way, and it is much better tasting than a bread machine, but the machine is so much easier. I am spoiled now. Perhaps when I retire some day, I will go back to the kneading and rising and baking in an oven. It feels good to use your hands and create one of humankind's most treasured foods. I hope you'll try it, but the bread machine is a good second choice. Check out bread machine recipes. There are a number of variations.
