1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1 ounce red food coloring
2 Tablespoons cocoa
1 Tablespoon vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Make a paste of red food coloring and cocoa. Add to milk. Sift flour and salt. Add alternating with buttermilk. Add vanilla. Mix soda and vinegar; fold into mixture. Bake in 2 greased and floured 8 or 9 inch round cake pans. Bake at 350º about 30-35 minutes. Split each layer in half crosswise. When cool frost with RED VELVET ICING.
