1 cut chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup boiling water
1/4 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 beaten egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Brown Sugar Coconut Topping
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 tbsp. milk
2 tbsp. butter
1/2 cup coconut

Put dates and soda in a bowl and pour in the hot water. Set aside. Beat butter in a bowl until creamy, beat in sugar then eggs, and vanilla. Stir in the dates. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add chopped nuts. Stir into date mixture. Bake in buttered cake pan in 350 oven until pick comes out clean.

For Topping:
Boil over low heat 3 minutes stirring constantly. Pour over cake as soon as it comes out of oven and return to oven to brown. (No longer than 3 minutes.)
