1/4 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. plus 1/8 tsp. salt, divided
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 c. plus 2/3 c. sugar, divided
2 ozs. chocolate, melted, divided
1 c. flour, sifted
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 c. dates, chopped
1/2 c. nuts, chopped
1/2 c. milk
2 c. water

Directions:

Cream together thoroughly the shortening, 1/2 tsp. salt, cinnamon, and 1/4 c. sugar. Add 1 oz. of melted chocolate and combine well. S ift together the flour and baking powder and reserve 1/4 and mix with the dates and nuts. Add the remaining sifted dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, blending well after each addition. Add the dates and nuts and blend. Combine 2/3 c. sugar, water, remaining 1 oz. of chocolate and salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Pour into a casserole dish. Drop the batter by spoonfuls over hot syrup. Bake in a moderate oven, 350, for 45 minutes. Serve warm or cold.

Alternate cooking method: This pudding can be cooked on top of the stove. Use a large saucepan instead of a casserole dish, and cook covered over very low heat for 25 minutes (this is the way my mom made it). Variations: Dates may be omitted. To substitute cocoa for chocolate, use 3 T. cocoa for each ounce of chocolate. For perfect results cook very low and serve warm. This is one of my favorite desserts that my mother made!
