1 c. white sugar
1 c. butter or shortening
1 3/4 c. flour
2 eggs
1 c. chocolate chips, divided
2 T. cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. dates, chopped
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. hot water
1 c. nuts, chopped

Directions:
Directions:
Mix and let sit the dates, baking soda, and hot water. Cream the butter and sugar, add the eggs and add the date mixture. Add the rest of the ingredients; flour, cocoa, vanilla, salt, and 1/2 c. chocolate chips and pour into a greased 13 X 9-inch pan. Sprinkle the other 1/2 c. chocolate chips and 1/2 c. nuts over the cake. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes.
