7 c. apples, sliced and peeled
1 c. sugar
1 T. butter
1 tsp. grated lemon rind
1 T. lemon juice
1/2 c. water
1/4 tsp. salt
3 c. soft bread crumbs
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 c. walnuts, chopped
whipped cream

Directions:
Directions:
Place the first seven ingredients in a saucepan and cook until apples are tender, about 15 minutes. Mix the remaining ingredients in a mixing bowl with a pastry blender. Place in alternate layers with the apple mixture into a 1-qt., greased casserole dish. Top with some of the bread crumb mixture. Bake in oven at 325 for 1 hour. Serve warm or cold, top with whipped cream.
