1 1/2 c soft shortening
2 c brown sugar (packed)
2 eggs
1/2 c molasses
4 1/2 c Gold medal flour
4 t soda
1/2 t salt
2 t cinnamon
2 t ginger

TOPPING
granulated sugar
1 t clove

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and molasses. Mix thoroughly. Blend all dry ingredients. Add all dry ingredients. Mix well. Chill dough.

Heat oven to 375º. Roll dough in 1 1/4" balls (by spoonfuls) Dip tops in sugar. Place balls (sugar side up) 3" apart on greased cookie sheet.
Sprinkle each cookie with 2-3 drops of water.

Bake 10-12 min. or just until set but not hard.

This is originally from grandma Blanche Bennett
Mom added some grated orange peel to this sometimes. My favorite cookie next to the Oatmeal Chocolate Cookies mom made.
