1/2 cup shortening
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup dark molasses
2-1/2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. cloves
3/4 hot water.

Preheat oven to 350.Cream shortening, sugar and egg until light, add molasses blend well. Sift together dy ingreidents, add alternately to cream mix. with hot water. Pour into paper lined 9" square pan . Bake for 40-45 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or warm applesauce.
