1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 cups flour (plain)
4 eggs
3 teas. baking powder (for 3 layers 2 1/2)
1 teas. salt
1 cup sweet milk
1 or 2 teas. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar in bowl until whipped. Add eggs to butter and sugar beating until each disappears. Add vanilla. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together...maybe twice. Divide flour mixture into 1/4 piles. Add alternately with milk which you add 1/3 cup at time. Start and end with flour. Grease and flour bottom and sides of pans. Use four 9" pans. Bake at 350 for 20 - 25 minutes.

Use the lemon cheese filling with this cake. I can remember both mother and grandmother baking this cake. Of course, now we buy cake mixes. See the recipe for basic icings for other icing ideas.
