2 cups chopped dates
2 cups chopped pecans
4 cups sifted flour
4 eggs, separated
1 1/3 cup buttermilk with 1 tsp soda

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 Tbsp grated orange peel

Topping:

2 cups sugar
1 cup orange juice
2 Tbsp grated orange peel

Directions:
Directions:
Dredge dates, nuts, and orange peel in flour. Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks. Add flour alternately with buttermilk. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Add dates, nuts, orange peel. Bake in greased tube pan approximately 90 minutes at 300 .

Mix topping ingredients in saucepan before starting cake. Heat, stirring occasionally, while cake is baking. Puncture cake with ice pick before removing from pan. Pour half of topping into holes. Turn cake out and puncture bottom. Pour remaining topping into holes. Chill cake before slicing.
