1 c sugar
c shortening
4 eggs, separated
2 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp vanilla
1 c milk

1 c sugar
6 Tbsp cocoa
3 Tbsp cornstarch
3 c boiling water

3 oz unsweetened chocolate
2 Tbsp butter
3 egg whites
Powdered sugar

Cream sugar with shortening and beat in egg yolks. Alternately mix in flour and milk. In medium bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Fold beaten egg whites into cake batter. Divide batter into 8 greased cake pans and bake at 450 until cake is firm but not burned (no time given). Spread filling thinly on hot cake as you remove it from the oven. To make filling, mix sugar, cocoa and cornstarch in small saucepan. Add water and let boil 10 minutes. Cool. Make frosting by melting chocolate and butter in saucepan. Beat egg whites until dry and add sugar until you can spread it thinly. Add melted chocolate and spread evenly over cake.
